I think it is MgCl2. Since Mg weight is 24/40 th that of Calcium, on a weight-to-weight basis, it melts more water. The ideal de-icer would be something like BeF2, but that is probably expensive.

I cannot remember the name of the chemical, but it is the same thing used in disposable diapers to contain the moisture. A teaspoon of this chemical can absorb about 6 ounces of water and turns it into a thick gel.
