It's just a simple shelf design thats about 8 feet tall by 3 feet wide, and 18 inches deep. It's open in the front with no doors. The back is made out of 3/4 inch plywood and the sides and shelves are made out of pine. It's not fancy. Someone bought the wood and screwed it together, but now they need to get rid of it. What's a reasonable amount of money for me to offer them for it. I don't know what its worth, and I don't want to offer them too much.

Also, what would the material alone cost (approximately)?

Maybe $20 to $40 for the material. A sale would depend on what they think it is worth and what they want for it. You could offer a small sum and see where it goes.

Then again, they might see you as a friend and make it a gift or simply give it to you if they were going to pitch it otherwise.

Material to build this shelf would reasonably cost you $80- $100 with #1 grade pine and a finish grade piece of 3/4 inch plywood. To buy something thrown together like this piece sounds like, depending on age, condition and other parties desire to sell I would offer them $30 - $40 and see what there reaction is. If they want much more than that for it you need to decide how much it is worth to you.

With all due respect to YOU and them, it seems it's a piece they wish to be rid of?

Assuming that someone...perhaps even the current owner crafted it and may have some emotional attachment in that sense, you might consider the same if you had to buy materials, build the unit and one day not need or want it.

The materials and effort are forgotten however in a deal such as this may be, and if you want the piece and think about what a "GLIT" unit might cost, I suggest $20-$25 is fair.

They got what they wanted/needed from it already. It would be piracy on their part to part with it as if it was an heirloom.
