11 answers

y=x-9
x+8y=0
thus through substitution
x + 8(x-9) = 0
x + 8x - 72 = 0
9x = 72
x = 8

Using the first equation: y=x-9 solve for x in terms of y. so add 9 to both sides and you get x=y+9

Next substitute what x equals into the second equation so you have (y+9) + 8y = 0
Now solve for y: 9+9y =0
take the 9 out 9(1+y) =0
divide the on both sides 1+y=0
subtract 1 on both sides y= -1

now put your y value in the first equation so you have
-1 = x-9
add 9 to both sides 8 = x

So, x=8 and y= -1

y = x - 9 ; x = y + 9 ; x + 8y = 0
sustituting y + 9 + 8y = 0
y = -1
therefore @x = -8y ; x = -8(-1) = 8
x = 8

First you decide which variable to solve for. Since y equals x-9, you can substitute (x-9) in for y in the second equation.

so you get x+8(x-9)=0

after distributing the 8, you get x+8x-72=0

then you combine like terms and solve for x...
9x-72=0
9x=72
x=8

Then simply plug in 8 for x to find what y equals.

y=(8)-9
y=-1

y=x-9...........a
x+8y =0..........b
change equation a to get the x on the other side
-x+y=-9
now add this on x+8y = 0
x+8y = 0
-x+y=-9
9y=-9
y=-1
substitute this in equation a
-1=x-9
x=9-1
x=8
so x=8 and y=-1

y = x - 9 -----(1)
x + 8y = 0 -------(2)

Sub (1) into (2),
x + 8(x-9) = 0
x + 8x - 72 = 0
9x = 72
x = 72/9
x = 8

When x=8, y = 8 - 9 = -1

So x=8 and y=-1.

take the second equatiion and write/work it out in terms of x
then input into the first equation in place of where the x is, then write this equation interms of y.
thus you have a numerical answer for y

put the final result as x=.... and y=.....

you can double check it by inputting the data into one or any of the eqations you stated above and it should work out

The goal is to get one equation with one variable, then you can solve it.

Solve the second equation for one of the variables. It's easiest to solve for x:

x=-8y.

They plug it in to the first equation:

y=(-8y)-9
9y=-9
y=-1

2007-04-22 14:50:48 · answer #9 · answered by outerbanksbeachfever 2 · 0 2

y=x-9 ---------------(1)

x+8y=0 ----------------(2)

substituted (1)into(2)

x+8(x-9)=0
x+8x-72=0
9x=72
x=8

x=8
from(1)
y=x-9
y=8-9
y=-1

thus,x=8,y=-1
