The other day i saw this bumber sticker....
"Welcome to America
We speak English
Learn it or Leave"

What are your thoughts on that?

I think it is interesting that America does not have an established language. I think that is dumb and i love that bumper sticker! I hate when people try to ask me a question and do not speak english it annoys me.

I think that the bumper sticker may have sounded harsh, but I think it's the truth. If the hispanics are going to come to America, they should at least learn the English language.

The bumper sticker is unduly harsh, and probably meant to be perceived from a narrow point of view, there is some truth to it. If I chose to live in another country I would learn the language, learn the customs, and learn the rules of the society so I could fully integrate and be a participant in my country. Basic communication with my neighbors and people at the store, restaurants, schools, etc is necessary to be part of a community.

However, the tone of the bumper sticker is much ruder than that interpretation. It implies that if you don't look like me than you are a thief and you should get out. It implies that english is the best language and America is the only country that anyone would ever want to live in. If the same person with this bumper sticker travel to a foreign country and then expect everyone there to be able to speak to him in English?

Done in jest, it is probably OK, but there are many other bumper stickers that would be more effective and less offensive.

I would learn the language of the new country I planned to move to. That is only the smart thing to do. People come here all the time without knowing our culture, dress, or even speech. I personally would make it a point to learn what I need to know to live there. Israel also teaches all of the people who are coming to their country, Hebrew.
