He was one hell of a general. He is known in America as the father of modern warfare. Most of the world says it is some British guy I think. The modern tactic of hit them hard, hit them fast, chase them to the doors of Hell and don't let up until they surrender is a combination of Grant and Sherman tactics.

I should say that Sherman was not the greatest general of all time. A great General yes, but the greatest no.
He was in many ways reckless however, he did implore the ideas of Von Clausewitz and spur the idea of total war.
US History is is pocked with great generals, Patton, Pershing, Bradley, Grant, Picket, Lee, just to name a few.
Many people will argue that Lee was probably the greatest strategist in American history. And others will argue he was not American because he fought for the South.

Not hardly. Sherman rose to fame via his brutal tactics in the South toward the end of the Civil War. It was in his infamous "march to the sea" that Sherman burned the land, depriving the citizenry of food, goods, their homes. Essentially, make the public suffer for the ills of their government. Post Civil War, Sherman went on to sundry Indian-War endeavors, eventually becoming General of the Army. That said, I'd not pick him as the greatest of all time. Sadistic? Sure. Cunning? Yes. Just not the greatest. For great you might look at:
1. Dwight Eisenhower
2. Douglas McArthur
3. Thomas Jackson

NO he was among the most useless.
Stonewall Jackson was the greatest American (confederate) general of all times.
His military style is still taught in military colleges nationwide and is recognized as a much more effecient general than either grant, sherman or Lee himself.
Sherman was effectively defeated but the confederates failed to follow up on thier victories.
The soputh simply ran out of materal and supplies. Had they waited a year (even several months ) before starting the war there would have been no contest.
The Union military had no great officers.

There are many greater generals in our history. MacArthur, who gained more ground, with fewer casualties than anyone has to be one of the best. If you count Confederates then Lee, Jackson, and Johnson. Sherman was a lot like Grant in that he did not mind sacrificing thousands of his troops for a victory.
