I don't believe it is necessary, unless you are trying to conserve space in the bin.
When I take my bottles and cans in for recycling, I never squish them down. I think some people like the "sensation of power" it gives them to just slam their foot on the cans to flatten them!

well the theory is that when smashed the contianter is empty therefore not containing any unwanted liquids that could contaminate the recycle process, it also makes for more space but thats really about YOUR connivance and they don't care about that but yeah its mostly to "confirm" the containers emptiness, and to save space on the recycle truck
