I am graduating a semester early with a B.S. in Biology . I love teaching and I would like to teach the semester before I go to medical school. Can someone just give me an intro to substitute teaching. The pay, hours, experience, difficulty in finding a job etc.

Depends on the State and the School District. My District in TX pays according to different things - if you have a degree you can make $70 a day, if you have a teaching cert. $85 a day. You apply through the central office where they do your back ground check and if you are hired you must do a orientation and get signed off on 8 hours of in classroom observations. Once you finish your "paper work" and begin subbing - you basically follow the daily routine of the teacher you sub for.

I would check into the District's office for the school district in which you are going to apply. They should be able to answer any questions about the "paperwork" and application process. Then see if you can talk with some substitutes in that district - they can give you insight from the actual substitutes view.

The pay is NOWHERE close to $30 an hour in my city! It is $60 a day! And you work NO less than 7 hours and 15 minutes!! Duty free lunch is nonexistant in elementary schools and a free period is NEVER guaranteed. And if you sub in a high school and there are not enough subs, then you will definitely cover a different class during your free period. You may come in for a Biology teacher, but you may end up covering any class in the building from PE to a self contained mentally retarded class. I will talk about the fun stuff like the students, teachers, and principals another time.

Substitute teaching will differ between states and districts. In my district in California's Bay Area, subs are paid $30/hr. You work the normal day, from 8:15 to 2:45 in upper elementary. The school provides lunch for its subs as well.
As far as I know, you don't need experience. You will, however, need to get fingerprinted and apply for a substitute credential at your county's office of education. Once that is set, you can contact different districts in your area to be on their substitute lists. You should not have difficulty in finding a job.
When a sub is needed, the district will call the sub when they find out that one is needed. That means you might get a call in the morning to come to a school right away! Sometimes, teachers will know when they are going to be absent days/weeks in advance, therefore giving the sub more notice.
Hope this helps!

You usually just need fingerprinting and a degree of some sort. The pay is always low, otherwise everyone would sub instead of teaching. I would sub rather than teach any day of the week. Stop by your local district and they will get you all set up.

Stick with medical school- sub teacher pay is abysmal $60-$80/day.
