exotoxins are produced by certain strains of bacteria which cause injury to specific cell lines in the host organism.

e. coli O157:H7 is a perfect example. they produce 2 exotoxins which are invasive: shiga 1 (stx1) and shiga 2 (stx2). they cause damage to the endothelial cells of the kidney, causing HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome) which causes renal failure, especially in small children.

a second example is an exotoxin produced by Staph. aureus, which results in toxic shock syndrome. their exotoxin is called cytokine.

a third example is the toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. botulinum toxin blocks neuromuscular transmission.
