In fighting for our right to unscreened phone calls are we fighting for the right for terrorists to elude the government?

A question that belongs with that one is: "Will it take another terrorist attack of epic proportions for Americans to wake up and realize that the threat is real?

I mean seriously why should you be afraid of the government listening in to your phone calls to make sure you're not getting ready to strap explosives to your body and kill thousands of innocent lives? Afraid they're going to find out you've been cheatin on your wife or somethin? Don't worry it's not illegal. If you're not speaking Arabic do you think they'll listen long anyway?

My feeling are, if that's what it takes, go for it. If one has nothing to hide, why would I care.
The way I see it, use all means possible. If someone has a problem with it, you have to wonder......why?

Your wrong. The question is, why do you want a tyrannical oppressive government.

You're completely comfortable with the government listening in on your calls, including calls regarding medical conditions, financial transactions. What if you're having phone sex with your wife?

Now what happens if the government passes a law that states that an employer can have access to all this information to ensure that they're not hiring terrorists. Are you still comfortable with that.

Or perhaps in order to generate revenue to support the war on terror, your government profile can be sold to advertising agencies.

In other words, people aren't protesting because they are doing something wrong. People are protesting because they've seen this movie before. They know how this movie ends. They are knowledgable about th history of the world and the assorted governments. People are protesting because they know what kind of slippery slope it is to grant the government any sort of broad powers.

Sure, people may not be doing anything wrong now, but as history has shown, a government's definition wrong changes with whoever comes to power. How long before the government outlaws protesting the government as an act of terrorism, for example.

If you think it can't happen here, you are sorely mistaken. Terrorism is the new Mcarthyism. Do a little historical research and you'll see exactly how close we came to becoming the very thing that we were opposing.

Governments are comprised of people and power. Anytime you mix people and power, bad things happen. You can not and should not trust your government.

That is one of things that makes this country great; that we can and do question our government. We shoudl be secure in the knowledge that we can without the government listening in.

People who support the government doing these things are absolute cowards. If you truly believed in the rights and freedoms you so claim to cherish, then you should be willing to risk your life to keep them, including the risk of terrorist attacks.

EDIT

After reading some of the comments on here, I can only imagine the founding fathers are spinning in their graves.

"They that would give up liberty for a little security deserv neither liberty nor security." Ben Franklin

I thought neocons would have some bravery, but evidently they are all hat and no cattle.

Check out Putin's Russia. He's doing what his doing to protect from the terrorists. Du you really want to follow that example?

It didn't wake them up after 9/11 - hey! It's been a bit over 5 years - no wonder they've already forgotten. The left hates the President so much (you know - the stolen elections...) that he could say anything and they will disagree just because he said it - right, wrong, or indifferent. The New York Slimes has done a lot of damage to our ability to fight against these fleabag terrorists. And the liberal idiots in Congress continue to give aid and comfort to the enemy. This country better wake the hell up or we are doomed.

Yeah, I guess we are. My phone calls won't be screened though, I don't call Afgahnistan or any other terrorist related place. I don't talk about bombs, guns, WMD's or anything else. I don't have to worry about the screenings and neither do alot of the American population. So we should stop worrying about this and realize that if we don't have anything to hide, we shouldn't care.

If we willingly give up our rights, what do we have left to fight for?

Our rights were won with the blood of our forefathers. They gave their lives to gain these rights of ours. Hundreds of thousands have died defending those rights. And you want to just hand them over!!!

That disgusts me.

It probably will take another attack for the people to wake up.
As for myself, it doesn't bother me at all. I would only fell sorry for the person that had to listen in an my calls. That person would have to drink a lot of coffee and take no doze.

One, nobody's listening to my calls or I'd hear the snoring from boredom! I sincerely doubt anyone is listening in on yours, either. Second, you are absolutely right! We cannot have freedom without security.
