How would a giraffe with a short neck in the past evolve into a long neck giraffe today?

Those that couldn't reach the leaves on the lower branches starved and couldn't reproduce. Those that could reach the medium height branches had a harder time surviving, but produced some offspring with varying neck length. Those with the longest necks ate the best and reproduced the most offspring.

Pretty soon (a few million years) those with the longest necks that could eat low leaves, medium height leaves and high leaves overwehlmed the rest.

I think God created the giraffe with a long neck to start with. How could it have evolved? If I cut off my fingers will my kids be born without fingers? If my kids cut off their fingers will their kids be born without fingers? And so on, and so on. What if i stretch my fingers, will my kids be born with longer fingers? If my kids stretch their fingers will their kids be born with even longer fingers? And so on, and so on. Evolution sounds pretty stupid to me.
