I've seen this happen many times. Usually, there are too many people taking orders and running into each other while trying to fill the orders they took, while there are too few people cooking the food. This results in order takers, having to stand around waiting for the food to be cooked. It seems like the more efficient way to take care of the customers is to work like an assembly line, with more people doing cooking duties. It seems like having someone in charge of cooking burgers, and another in charge of dropping fries would help to cut down on waiting times, instead of having the people in charge of taking orders, having to drop the fries after they've figured out that they don't have any to serve the customers they have waiting in line. It also seems like the fast food joints don't set up enough space for the cooking duties. This results in not having enough cooks to keep up with the orders.
Restaurants that cook to order would be slower by their very nature. Restaurants that supposedly pride themselves on fast service, need to take a look around and find out where their roadblocks are--and fix them.
I've gone into a McDonalds and had to stand around with a dozen other people waiting for the orders we've given. I've gotten so used to this problem that I often take a book with me to read while I'm standing in line waiting for my order.

Think a slow fast food place would be something like Carl's jr. and In-n-out Burger. Those places cook to order and don't have food under a warmer waiting for it to be ordered. I think the food in these places is much better. Jack In The Box cooks to order too.

You pay way too much for food you wouldn't eat if you cooked it yourself at home. I mean, really. If you saw what goes on in the kitchen of fancy, schmancy restaurants, you would go to the Piggly Wiggly instead and make your own meals!

They all can be slow - depends when you go. Burger King drive through and if you go inside - both slow.
Wendys drive thru is quick but if you go in its slow.
McDonalds is-------middle of the road depending on the day.
All of these have a lot of food thats fattening-good and greasy. They also have Ice creams/salads/different types of sandwichs.

White Castle is the slowest I have ever seen. Oder ten sliders, a fry and a beverage and you could be waiting for 15 minutes...brutal..
