1=x (subtract 7 from both sides)

nope its 1.
If you mius 8 from both sides you get
-x = -1
then you drop the minus from each side, because the cancel eachother so you have x=1.

if you do it the other way and start by adding x to each side you get 8 = 7 + x, then just go one to minus 7 from both of them.
again you wind up with x = 1
