First settled between 60 and 40,000 years ago by people who must have had boats (think about that one)

Northern part definitely visited by Macassan seafarers for many centuries, and almost certainly by Chinese.

Western bit accidentally stumbled upon by Dutch seafarers on their way to the East Indies. First English person to visit was William Dampier (a Pirate of Exquisite Mind), also on the west coast.

Dutch and Portuguese mapped most of the place (except the East Coast) before 1770. There is a real possibility that the Portuguese also visited the East Coast.

Captain Cook mapped the east coast in 1770. Claimed it for England.

After the American War of Independence the poms could not send their convicts to North America any more, so decided to send them to Australia.

The first batch of convicts arrived in 1788. Local bemused.

European folk spread out, to the detriment of the existing people.
