I know exactly why it's on, but I don't need to deal with it right now. Can I turn it off or does it require some sort of a machine that only a mechanic has?

My light came on today too! I went to my local Advance Auto and they hooked it up the their computer tool, erased the error message and told me what was wrong with it. As long as it something that will only cause the light to come on every now and then or something this is what I would do. I did not buy the part either as they said it may have been a one time things, so they just erased the error-it took a whole 3 minutes, literally.

Even if you reset it, the light will come back on the next time the problem recurs.

There's no way to tell the system "don't warn me about this particular problem again".

That also means it won't warn you of OTHER problems that might arise in the future, because the light is already on for this problem.

Also, you'll have to fix it before the car's next smog test, if you have those or you move to a place that does.

Yes, you can clear the fault but it will come back is the problem has not been fixed. Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes - sometimes it works but it doesn't have to. For OBD2 ('96 and younger) vehicles, you are likely to need a scanner that you can buy for $50.

what is the year make and model? if it is 96 or newer you will need a scan tool to turn it off. you can also leave the negative battery cable disconnected with the headlights or brake pedal depressed(to drain all power from the computers memory and capcacitors) for about 10 minutes.

They can hook a ECU (computer) scanner on and check why it's on and turn it off with the ECU scanner too so it's no biggy.
Just ask one of the shops to check why the computer is giving the "check engine" light

Take it to autozone and they will erase it for free or put a business card or tape over the light

If you don't want to deal with it right now, put black electrical tape over it.
