Stem cells are special cells that can become any kind of cells that the body needs. Embryos have lots of stem cells because the tissues are developing. If you think of an embryo that is just starting to grow, it has ever-dividing cells, but those cells have not yet become skin, muscle, nerve, bone, .... Those generalized cells are called stem cells.

Stem cells are important because they become all the cells of an organism's body. The research on stem cells is important because some disorders and injuries can not be fixed by the body without stem cells. For instance, people with spinal cord injuries have no chance of repairing their damaged nerve cells. Mature nerve tissue does not regenerate nor repair itself. However, stem cells may have the ability to become new nerve cells.

In addition to embryos, there are stem cells in the blood from umbilical cords and in some parts of the adult body, including the nasal mucosa.
