I did not notice any symbolism, a description usually used in literary (written) work; not in music. The lyrics, were of course written, and I often thought they had a metaphorical aura, which could have meant the prediction for an end to an era of Rock and Roll.
However, Don McLane was quoted as saying:
"The song starts off with my memories of the death of Buddy Holly. But it moves on to describe America as I was seeing it and how I was fantasizing it might become, so it's part reality and part fantasy but I'm always in the song as a witness or as even the subject sometimes in some of the verses."

Nonetheless, I do love that song, so I will give you a small start.
"The day the music died" was in reference to Buddy Holly's death in a plane crash.
