Are you willing to substantially curtail your spending, lifestyle, and consumption to prevent a world-wide catastrophe if it were proved beyond all reasonable doubt?

"It's beyond all reasonable doubt that carbon dioxide emissions contribute to dangerous global warming. Most EU countries have cut their emissions; the United States has barely begun. Unless the US does more to restrain itself, how can we possibly expect China, and other rapidly industrialising countries to do the same. What is to be done?"

I am willing to spend the rest of my life research and develop solar energy based solutions to energy crisis (and I am thining about it right now - but I am a world class procrastinator stuck in other aspects of my life). That way I can provide solutions to people, like, making a solar power plant to produce electricity and replace coal usage not just sit and tell them not to turn on their electric heater as long as they want.

Buying or driving a more economical car is more money for other things as well. But, if there's a global disaster such as the Yellowstone Caldera erupting than our time is limited as this can happen in the nearer future also. Greed seems to be the major factor in so-called global emissions at this time and token efforts are just to please the people politically. What could or should be done is to bring these energy saving devises out of moth balls especially for those who can't afford the price of fuels. So much for an evolved civilization.

The Environment needs to become as important an issue as eating else we're all fcuked. The problem is too many humans are selfish and uncaring, and also many people are underprivileged. It's easy for richer people to say, yep.. I'm going to switch to a greener gas company, or waste less energy, or stand at the supermarket checkout and strip purchases of all their excess packaging & refuse to take it home.. but poorer people cannot afford to take such steps in many cases. Poorer people cannot afford to get their engines fixed so they don't pump out excessive smoke/CO2, or pay these new environment companies to "balance" their carbon emissions by planting new trees & crap like that (ok, it's a good idea but do you really think these companies have the same measuring standards as the people who are paying them? not likely)

Anyway, I'm conscious of it and am willing to make my little bit of difference - and there lies the crucial point, Awareness. Many people are unaware of the issue, and of those who understand the problem, only a small percentage actually do anything about it. So, I refer to my first point of turning this problem into a topic of mainstream conversation and thought in every single person, which at the moment, is impossible. These things take time. Computers took time but now little kids in developing third world countries are learning how to use them, even if they don't have enough food to get through the day. This concept will catch on soon enough, it has to. The human race has survived through some seriously hard times, take the Ice Age for example. We learn and adapt, and we will do in this case too.

Can't stop the whole world from driving, even if you stop driving others will. Plus the weather will never be the same or come back to normal. Just hopefully the world will turn to alternative energy soon, then people would be saving the world from catastrophe and saving money.
