I was watching the news about this ten-year-old girl who was home alone with her three-year-old sister when the mom was at work. They are now both missing, which is really sad. Could this whole thing have been prevented if the mother had been responsible? Sorry if I offend anyone.

The children have a grandmother, aunt and their mom has a boyfriend that all could have watched them.

I'm not offended, to be honest. You're right, the mother should have been home, or should have made arrangements to have the kids watched. Anyone who can't do that shouldn't have kids. And yes, I do know of some parents who have done so, and have wondered how they got so lucky to still have kids...

Yeah. She should have had someone over there watching them. 10 years old is not old enough to leave them alone. Especially with a 3 year old. My daughter is only 20 months old but I dont plan on letting her be by herself until shes at least 14 years old. And only for a couple hours. You just never know what could happen. And if by any chance she was left home by herself at that age, I'd be calling all the time and maybe even checking up on her because my aunt got pregnant at 14 when her mom was at work. I dont want the same thing to happen to my daughter.

i have kids - unless they are old enough to drive - i would never leave them home alone. . . not sure why the mom would make that choice. daycare and after school daycare is VERY expensive, not an excuse but sometimes it plays a factor on if the parent works, etc. then there is those no school times which leaves the work force in a bind. sometimes a no win situation. . but, not an excuse AT ALL! If I couldnt find daycare for my young children I would suck it up with work and reap the consequences with work, not the children. And also, daycare is much much much more than $250 as stated above.

Ten is pretty young to be home babysitting, but you have to take other things into consideration.
No mention of a dad, so I'm going to assume he's not involved and probably doesn't pay child support.
Day care alone for those 2 kids would run close to 250 bucks in most places. Minimum wage, 40 hours a week, mom wouldn't be able to cover that.
Not every town has a YMCA and a lot of times towns that do have them will turn away families because the programs are full. How can you condemn the poor woman when you haven't walked in her shoes?
Maybe it was her only choice.

Didn't offend me, you are absolutely right. 10 is far too young to stay home alone, and too young to properly take care of a 3 year old. I don't know the mom's situation but bad, bad move.

No you are so right. That mother should never do that to a 10 year old kid! Too much responsibility for a young girl.

i think 10 is young to take care of a three year old. i think in our state it's 12, but i really think it depends on the maturity of the oldest child. the mother may have thought she was being responsible, and thought that her 10 year old was capable. i just don't think they are ready to take charge in an emergency situation at that age.

Well sometimes parents can't afford daycare. I was in jr. high like 13 or 14 and staying all night by myself because my mom worked nights at the Post Office. My mom had no choice she was a single parent.

Mother responsible? Where's the father? Maybe she's a single mom doing her best to support her 2 children... Ever thought about that!?!

It's amazing!!!!!!!
It's called the Y.M.C.A or the Boys and Girls club!!!!
They both offer a sliding scale for low income families.
I think most parents remember being left alone, and think it's okay to do it these days.
