It depends on your starter...but after choosing your starter, Shinx is a great addition that you can find on route 202. Starly is also a great flying type since it has two evolutions and can learn wing attack fairly early on:

If you didn't get a grass or water starter, catch a Bundew early on. If you don't mind leveling up for a while, you can catch a magikarp after the second town to the west which evolves into a gyarados.

In the town with the first gym, you can catch a machop and trade it to a girl in the town for an Abra, a great psychic pokemon. Or if you want a sturdy rock type, you can catch a geodude in the cave before that.

If you have a Turtwig, here goes:

Turtwig (of course)
Shinx (he is useful now due to his high attack and speed stat)
Kricketot/Kricketune (Kricketune if you don't bother leveling Kricketot up)
Murkrow (evolve it around LV35 later on. Great against the grass gym)
Machop/Meditite (Meditites are actually better with Pure Power)
Ponyta (you will not get another Fire type before the National Dex)

If you chose Chimchar:
Chimchar
Shinx
Barboach (you can get one by fishing with a good rod).
Machop/Meditite
Budew (they are great for the first gym which you will probably be stuck on)
Murkrow/Starly/Staravia

If you chose Piplup (which I did):
Piplup
Shinx
Budew (great for the fourth gym)
Murkrow
Ponyta
Kricketune's great for disrupting because of its Sing.

If you have Pearl, you'll catch Misdreavus' instead of Murkrow.
