Mostly this disdain is recent. Currently the conservatives back a war that is unpopular in United Nations, and also oppose international courts and less hard line stances on places like Iran. This puts them at odds with many members of the U.N., and that is the main reason conservative commentators disregard them. By minimalizing the U.N.'s utility, they are able to better justify their actions to their constituents here at home. This has not always been true. Conservatives like Eisenhower and Reagan relied heavily on the help of the United Nations, especially regarding matters of the Cold War and international security. There have also been times when the United Nations was in opposition to liberal views in America as well. It generally depends on the time and issue. In the current time on current issues, however, conservatives are at odds with international views, and that is the source of the venom you see in their comments.

A philosophy of those on the left is of centralised control. Check out the official sites of the ALP and the Greens. They have always promoted abolition of the states.
Conservatives have always believed (somewhat) in individual rights whereby the individuals in this state choose these rights and the individuals in another state choose those rights.
People of the left alternately believe that the hoi polloi are not really that smart and need guidance by the elected elite who would decide that only one set of rights are needed and what those rights specifically are.
The UN is anathema to conservatives because it is, or would become, the ultimate central government.
Of course the endemic corruption of the UN doesn't help.

The reason why I do not like the UN is the fact that the UN appears to do nothing in the face of obvious violations of human rights. The organization has no teeth. A perfect example would be that of Darfur in Sudan. The UN could not send in peacekeepers because Sudan would not approve of it, even though it was obvious that the Sudanese government was supporting those who were committing unspeakable atrocities in Darfur. How was the UN's response in Rwanda, what about to the murder of Kurdish civilians under Hussein in Iraq, what about in the Balkans?

I really dont think that there are a lot of conservatives that hate the U N because they support us in a lot of the decisions that we make.
Like 4 out of 5 countries in the UN wanted to go to war with Iraq. I think that conseratives really do not like France.

Well, the UN is full of corruption and is practically useless. Saddam violated so many resolutions, and the UN did nothing. Now that Kofi Annan is out, maybe this will change.

The U.N. is a spineless and useless organization. All people of the world should despise corrupt and ineffective bureaucracies. If the U.N. earned respect, they may actually get it. They have earned nothing but disdain.
Time for them to pay their N.Y. parking tickets and pack their bags for Caracas.

Because they don't like the idea of America having to ask for anything...or that any other country on earth should have any sort of say in or opinion on what happens on the planet. I think it's called manifest destiny.

I'm not a Conservative (nor a liberal). I hate the concept of a world-wide body with any enforcement powers (including taking my $). It's loaded w/ non-judged nations - a level playing field: Build life saving meds, send men to the moon, discover distant stars... you're in; Preach "death to America", "death to Israel", take hostages... you're in.
This is a truely evil institution that we ought to abandon ASAP.

Because they are generally contemptuous of anyone who isn't American or doesn't agree with them..
They think we are right 100% of the time. Like any lunatic, or intellectually immature spoiled brat would think about themselves.
