Not everybody does. There are many chinless wonders about but big ones small ones receeding ones all cushion the most vulnerable end of your jaw from bumps knocks and melting ice-cream cones

It's an anchor for your tendons that attach to the muscles in the jaw. Over time our jaws have become more powerful and the muscles require a more sturdy anchor.

the muscles of the jaw need something to attach to, so the jaw can move up and down, and the muscles of the lips and lower face can do their job.
