To let the water drip off of them?

Has it rained recently where you are? The open umbrellas could be airing out. Sometimes when people forget to dry out their umbrellas they tend to mildew fast, so maybe that is why. any other reason, I'm not sure of. Sorry if this didn't help.

um, cause they're weird? I have no idea. sounds kinda strange. For serious though, there is this house down the road, that buried a boat in their front yard. All you can see is the windshield of the boat, then you notice you can sit in it... but it's buried. What's up with that?

Maybe those two families are related lol.

They do that to catch the walnuts as they fall from the tree. Perhaps it could be a fruit even. I have seen farmers do this and ask what for..and that's what I was told.

Maybe there are birds that sit in the trees and they don't want to get splattered with bird droppings.

I have seen people do this to catch mulberries off of trees.
