No that is totally bogus. This was a fake statistic that was made for the sole purpose of seeing how quickly it would spread. And that fake story was 8 spiders a year. See link.

If one really swallowed an average of 8 spiders a year, how could anyone find this? Take one person and film him/her 365 nights a year using infrared camera and have someone count the times a spider is seen entering the mouth of the test sleeper and not come out?

I mean, come on...

NO! definitely not. You should check your sources again, and see how they have collected the data.

Here's what I think is happening. There are several cultures in Asia/Africa/South America and several other places that eat spiders (or do not notice eating it while in sleep). And may be their eating gets averaged with the whole population?! That doesn't make sense, but as I said, be sure to check your sources.

I won't be surprised to hear that every human, on average, gets spider-bite in their sleep. But eating sounds a bit too exaggerated.

Well considering I have never woke up with spider legs in my mouth, nor the aftertaste of anything that would stand out, as well as the fact that I have never heard of anybody swallowing a spider while the sleep. I would assume it is false. Also wouldn't one think you would wake up if a spider landed in your mouth? Try putting a feather in your mouth, I imagin it would be about the same feeling. Also considering hundreds of thousands of people die as children or newborns, it would not be sufficient to save "on average" especially ever since cars came into use.

I would say no, just based on common sense. How many times have you found a dead spider in your bed? It's only happened once in my life, and I was living in a spider infested house for 5 years (we'd literally kill about a dozen a day). If spiders are crawling on you in your sleep, it would be more likely that you'd roll onto one and kill it than eat one. If we're eating spiders, you'd think we'd be finding lots of them in our beds.

I'm sure we eat many more bugs while awake (like in our food, or accidentally while outdoors) than in our sleep.

Recent scientific research proved that spider consumption is always greatest on the second Tuesday of the week. No one understands why.

No, you are way underestimating this fact. I once saw on a Discovery Channel show that on average, ppl swallow 12 spiders a YEAR in their sleep.

Yes it is true. (well not spiders, but bugs in general)
I once dated someone in the food industry who had access to all those statistics.
The other surprising one is that in your life time you will eat 1/2 pound of bug excrement from processed foods.
Also there is a good chance a bug will lay eggs in your ear.
Its true

I remember spitting something out in my sleep.
I don't know if it was a spider or not.
It woke me up kind of, because I was having troubles spitting it out and that is all I can remember.

I doubt if you would actully eat it.

Ever had a bug shoot into your eye, nose or back of your throat?
