Simplify the following expression by combining like terms:
0.02 (x - 100) + 0.2 (x - 50)

Let a = -1, b = -2 and c = 3. Find the value of the following algebraic expression: a2 - 2ab + b2
(Unable to get the a2 and b2 for squaring)

To whom it may concern:

I can help you with both problems.

Problem 1. To combine these like terms, you will first use the Distributive Property (a(b)+a(c)=a(b+c)). So,
.02(x-100)=.02x-5 and .2(x-50)=.2x-10
Next, we will combine like terms. So,
(.02x-5)+(.2x-10)
It is important to remember, we cannot combine regular number and the number of x's (or variables) So, we can only combine the variables with variables and the numbers with numbers. Therefore,
.02x+.2x=.22x and -5+-10=-15 So, the answer is .22x-15

Problem 2.
For this one we will be using the substitutioin method. When we have three different variables, just like in this one we will merely subsitute in the numbers we are given to equal certain variables. So,
a2-2ab+b2 would become -1squared-2(-1)(-2)+(-2)squared, which all simplifies down to
1-4+4, which all ends up equalling 1.

I hope I have been of some help.
Sincerely,
Young Einstein

I assume there is not a equal ( = ) symbol

0.02(x - 100) + 0.2(x - 50)

0.02x - 2 + 0.2x - 10

0.22 - 12

- - - - - - - -

a = - 1

b = - 2

c = 3

There is no " c " in the equation

a² - 2ab + b²

(- 1)² - 2(- 1)((- 2) + (- 2)²

1 - (- 2)(- 2) + 4

1 - (4) + 4

1 - 4 + 4

1

distribute the .02 to both parenthesis:
.02x - 2 + .2x - 10

combine the x's and the non-variable numbers
.22x - 12

As for the a^2-2ab+b^2....
plug in the numbers and solve:
=(-1)^2 - 2(-1)(-2) + (-2)^2
=1-4+4
=1

not sure why it says c=3
