I think in a lot of instances it's beyond just looks. The society we're in kinda views women in a certain age range more favorable than all others (mainly the 18-35 age range I think); if you're younger than that you're often thought of as being immature, childish, inexperienced and clueless. If you're older than that, you're sort of viewed as being over the hill, passe, or "having let yourself go". That's the kinda message the media constantly tell us and the same message we pass on every time we continue to wanna "dress older" or "look younger" whether it's with cosmetic procedures, or clothes...or whatever.
With guys a lot of times it seems like when they're young the message is "he's the strapping young hot guy" and when they're older it's "older men are sexy". Chubby guys aren't looked at with nearly the same cruelty as chubby girls are and dieting isn't pushed nearly as much on guys as it is on girls.
The whole double standards thing is an epidemic and there seems to be no end in sight because people don't seem to really feel too much of a need to speak up on it. People have grown accustomed to a culture of constantly picking on the flaws of others and themselves and not accepting or embracing things as they are.
Aging is natural so why not just let nature take it's course?

Older women no longer have the security of a family so these days we try to prove ourselves to each other as well as the opposite (or same sex). Society is very discriminating against the non perfect looking woman.
It's sad that the women allow their 12-17 year old daughters to dress sexy and are surprised when they end up with some predatory male or female.

Sweetness got it right. Every woman wants to be or at least look like they are in their 20s. Older women will deny it, all the while buying truck loads of age defying cream and young girls will deny it, while they are wearing stiletto heels and a push-up bra. Unfortunately we have a beauty standard in our society and it is to look young and fresh as long as possible.

When you were very young did you not want to look and be older? When you are older do you not want to look and feel younger? It's human nature and men do it as well.

Human vanity and parental guidance are hard topics to talk about. Every Mother wants to be Her Daughter,s "sister", it has to do with ego.

Because there's that golden age when you look you best... your teens/twenties basically. People younger than that try to make themselves look older and people older than that try to make themselves look younger.
