I can see why you would love a character in a movie; the can represent ideals, struggles, values, and actions you love. But why do people love the actor who only pretends to be these things. The character shares little with him, only his image.

I can see like an actor's skill, but then you only like the fact they enterain you which is an action not the person doing the action.

I can see why you would like an actor that only does action or comedy though, what they portray is always consistent unlike a drama actor who may pretend to represent conflicting values when you watch two movies.

The actors have public relations people whose job it is to build the actor's image. The actor goes on talk shows where the questions and answers are scripted to be cute, funny and entertaining. They are rarely seen in public in an unflattering way and when they are shown to be human, they get pissed. (Interesting side note, ever notice how an audience at a talk show is told to applaud an actor when they say something so mundane as, "I love my kids."? Happens ALL the time... These shows make it sound like most people hate their kids, but actors are special and should be put on a pedestal because they love their kids.) Actors 'create' romances and talk about political ideals to build fan interest in their product (themselves), just like any (good) advertising agency would. Yet they leave the kids with the nanny and take a Lear Jet to another city for dinner while the Prius sits in a driveway.
And it works for the industry. The more glamorous and interesting an actor seems, the more people will go see their movies (even if the movie stinks - see Ocean's Twelve) and the more money they can command. Even 'bad boy' actors are loved. They are so 'brave' to go through rehab. BULL. They go through rehab because they were caught by someone and their image suffered.

Hope this helps. Sorry it was so long, turned into a rant.

OK. My first thought was Tom Cruise or even Julia Roberts. They find a formula that works for them creative wise try to stretch but go back to what they do well. It's just my opinion but some of these guys get old to watch. I like Halley Berry who stretches a bit but want more comedy there. Charlize Theron. Powerful actor not powerful money producing product.
There are exceptions like Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller etc they make us laugh all kinds of ways. Generally, they are good at altering the format to keep it interesting.
Hope that shows I read and took time to answer :))

I love every character Tom Cruise plays, but I dislike him as a person. It's hard to explain why people feel like that, I think it has to do with the way they are portrayed in real life.
I like James Franco, and Jason Statham even though they arent the best actors.

I think usually it boils down to one (or a combination) of three things:

1. The actor/actress is just to die for attractive.
or
2. The actor/actress is charismatic.
or
3. The actor/actress is playing a character that you identify with, believe in, or want to be like.
