Just make sure that you dont keep then in a humid place, especially for too long. In the winertime they should be fine in the cubboard, but in the summer put them in cooler place.

I keep them in the fridge. I live alone, too. They say that the potatoes get sweet that way, but I can deal with that better than soft and shriveled. It isn't a silly question at all. What are we supposed to do, buy two pounds at a time? They come in five and ten pound bags. I dump them in one of the drawers in the fridge and never have to worry about them.

An apple. Whether in the fridge or in a cupboard, just put an apple in with the potatoes. If either of them becomes super soft or moldy, remove it/them, of course. But as an apple dries/grows old, etc. it gives off something that stops potatoes from growing eyes.

A potato "eye" permits you to understand that your potato desires to sprout new spuds. My neighbor had this take place to her and she or he positioned a number of the sprouting spuds interior the floor final twelve months. This twelve months she extra over "new" potatoes. It takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks for the eyes to sprout. it is merely nature taking its direction. possible consume the potatoes with sprouts. merely merely remember to decrease the "eyes" out and the dark spots earlier cooking. do no longer consume the eco-friendly area because of the fact it incorporates an alkaloid that's poisonous. And constantly shop your spuds in a funky, dry, dark place.

this is just a natural occurence and you shouldnt worry about it. But if it just annoys you, and you absolutely need relief, the fridge is the best answer. The freezer works even better, but obviously you have to take the time to thaw them before cooking, and you may loose freshness.
