America's top social problem is that people are suffering a significant lack of responsibility for their own actions.
We even now have cars that will park for us and won't let us "rear end" someone else or change lanes. We pass students with failing grades and no longer are allowed to discipline our children. We give trophies to children playing sports who don't do anything for them but show up (I have a son who plays hockey and LaCross) . We also have music teaching our kids to be disrespectful of both women and authority, and the media showing people nothing but rape, pillage and plunder and blaming it on everyone else.
We had less problems with crime, truancy, and core values when people were held accountable for what they do.
But hey, I'm just a girl who's emotionally scarred because I was spanked as a child when I deserved it and once failed Algebra class as a Sophomore in high school because I refused to do my homework as assigned.

Disproportionate economics, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This happens when everything is based on percentages. A company gives a 3% raise, the guy at the top just landed a windfall, then guy at the bottom, barely anything and now they are even farther apart.

Drug addiction is not the major social problem- the problem is that we're spending millions of dollars on criminalizing drugs and trying to keep them out and we're spending very little money on getting people off drugs that already have a problem.
I would go with our current state of poverty, education, violence, and social injustice (racism/homophobia) off the top of my head.

I think America's top problem is critical thinking. We have an enormously large population of people who do not know how to think. We have an even more worrisome population of people with education, who are even more stupid.
If people could think, we could tackle some big problems.
But right now, we're erring on doom.
