I have always been a night person for years. I'm an ICU nurse. I used to work the graveyard shift i.e., 11p-7AM. I have tried all shifts. I find the graveyard shifts or the 12-hour shifts being the best; i.e., 7p-7a.
The 12- hr is the best shift for a decent family life. You don't feel like you're working long hours or even working at all. You only work 3x a week. You don't need babysitter if you have small kids. You're available during the day if the children have any problems in school. You get to participate in your kids' school activites. You get to go the post office, supermarkets and banks. You can still attend parties and go to work. after.. You can attend graduation ceremonies which are milestones for the children. You get to sleep in late when you're off. You can still enjoy TV and movies.
Working the day shift is the pits. You have too many chiefs; less Indians. You have to wake up at the ungodly hour. I hate waking up in the mornings esp when it's winter and it's cold. Leaving a warm bed is agony. You have to go to sleep early in order to wake up early the following day for work.
The afternoon shift is the worse. If you're married; and your husband works the dayshift; you hardly get to see each other. It's like two ships passing thru the night. a lot of troubles and problems happen during the PM due to the human ciracadian rhythmn.Did you know that a lot of heart attacks and stokes happen during the PM. or late evening?. You can not have family sit-down supper. You miss a lot of parties. You can become very lonely when you get off work.at 11p. There no more good TV shows to watch except talk shows. You'll miss American Idol. Every businesses are already closed. You tend to eat more and gain weight If you have small children in schools; you tend to miss any school activities. You're always tired to play with them. Your life gets too routine. It just revolves around sleeping and going to work. Your love and sex life really sucks. A lot of sleep deprivation is experienced during the PM shift.
The 12-hr really works. it requires less staff. The work is on a continuum basis. The workload is well distributed. You can still have a normal; private and social life. aside from work. You can still spend quality time with your family at large.

Morning even though I hate waking up once you get up and get it(work) over with you have the rest of the day to enjoy. When I worked on 3rd I felt like an alien or something -sleeping all day and working at night when everyone else was in bed it made me cranky and exhausted all the time.
