I work in a High Street store and was due to work a late shift however this was changed at the last minute (one day before) to an early which is unsuitable for me as I have a prior engagement which I cannot change. Were do I stand? I have been told I will be disciplined for failing to show up but the hours do not suit and have been given to me at extremely short notice.

Well personally I would file a complaint against the person who scheduled you.. They may be written up..

Bosses are supposed to give at least 24 hours notice when they change someone's shift, especially if the schedule has already been posted. Talk to your boss. Tell them that you were not told of the change in the schedule and that you already had plans that you couldn't get out of. If it was 24 hours notice you don't have much choice. How much do you need the money from this part-time job?

It probably depends on what you were told about flexibility in scheduling when you were hired.
