Anyone can bring any weapon secretly onto campus, where they know that no one else poses any threat to them, being unarmed. How do we best protect our children from those armed predators who secretly disobey our laws at will? Especially when they attack our children in their schools?
Beyond the pound of cure, what is the ounce of prevention for such lawless individuals?

Remember that lawless individuals do not care about what they are and aren't permitted to do or possess (including guns).

The focus on schools here is not to imply the absence or inferiority of other issues of security, but to focus on the unique security challenges in academia.

The problem lies deeper in how kids are treated and educated.

I think we should focus more on discipline of our children. Disciplined children have been proven to have higher self esteems and do better in the real world.
I also think we should instill school dress codes. Schools are a place to learn, not to hold a fashion show. If they all start on the same level, there is less for them to be bullied for.
The absolute first complaint of a school bully should be an automatic suspension. 3 complaints and they are out of school
More extra-curricular activities that can reach a wider range of children.
Parent involvement!!!!! Is an absolute must. In order for your child to attend a particular school, then the parent must attend a set amt. of teacher conferences per year.
There will always be violence of some sort, but maybe if we start with the kids themselves they won't be the aggressors.

Well Gun control might help, but there are a ton of guns already out there. We could follow them around 24/7 and protect them. We could make it a point that everyone carries a gun everywhere at all times.
These all seem pretty dumb don't they? If we want to live in a free society, we need to be willintg to take certain risks. School shootings are a terrible thing, but the only way to truly prevent them is to start taking peoples rights away. The odds of a child getting injured in a shooting are astronomically low. But, it is a price we pay for our second amendment rights.
Im not saying the second amendment is right or wrong, but this is how it is..

School? School? do you think shootings only happen in school? yeah its a sensational story what happened in VA but it is not normal! Normal shootings take place when Black guys are coming out of clubs and the cops start firing just so they can feel they are in control of the "n words"!! If everyone could own a gun there would just be more cops and black guys dead. Cops will still shoot blacks but now blacks would be shooting back at cops to save their life and their brother's lives!
That little Asian punk was acting out what he saw on TV in columbine! IF THE MEDIA WOULD STOP SENSATIONALIZING THESE STORIES that would prevent copycats! and once again...school is not where most shootings take place in this country!
We have a jail system for prevention that's all we need because VAtech was an isolated event

The solution is much simpler than most think: LISTEN TO THEM.
Your children will TELL YOU if there are problems, and your children know long before the administration will.
I experienced this when I was in school, and fortunately had parents that listened to me, which stopped a lot of violence, including a shooting at my bus stop in 8th grade.

You can't protect everyone from every possible threat at all times. What people REALLY need is some perspective. Incidents like the shooting at Virginia Tech are exceedingly rare and shouldn't even be a concern in most rational people's lives.

Hmm lets see, and yes I saw this answer on Y/A Yesterday so I am plagiarizing. If you Had one college class, with an armed teacher, and a couple of armed students, there wouldn't be 32 dead people right now.

I went to a private college last year and we had some one brought a gun to campus. Just because it's private, doesn't make it any better.
