There present involvement is good enough. Do we really want the USA to become more involved once that happens the game will have to be changed to make it TV friendly (a commercial at every stopage and the like). Take a look at what TV has done to Ice Hockey a fast 60 minutes all action game now reduced to a series of stop start sessions that can take 3 hours.
Next they will want World Cup matches to kick off for prime time TV with no thought to those who are going to the games or taking part. Look at the Olympics Athens marathon timed for American TV ran at the hottest time of the day.
Let them carry on as they are The Beckham idea has been tried before look who has played in the USA over the years and it has still not got then going.

As soon as people with money see that they can turn a profit then money will start to pour in and the United States. The sport will then grow and the nation will rise fast to a dominating power. Our youth play it competitively against each other, and against the more talented south and central American immigrants. They just cannot get paid like an American football or Basketball player so they drop it at a very early age.

As soon as they see that a profit can be made is the states then USA will shine. The profits will hopefully lead to increase in salaries and so people will stick to it when they can see themselves making millions like an NBA or NFL star.

That is what is the main motivator of the USA and we do not bother to hide behind national or team pride like England wants their players to. It is all about the pay check and chance to win a trophy. For america to shine the average salary of a soccer player must be on par with an American football, or NBA player. A generation, or maybe a half a generation after that occurs, is when America will be the best at Football/Soccer.

It will start to happen when the oppurtunities for American soccer players become more attractive. The level of play in the MLS needs to improve, and start turning a profit. If the MLS can start paying their players an average salary of like 200,000 a year (350,00 is minimum wage in NBA) and ESPN starts giving soccer more exposure, kids who are talented athletes will explore soccer rather than automatically jump into basketball and american football. It's also crucial for colleges to not CUT THEIR SOCCER PROGRAMS. It's really stupid that colleges can't "afford" soccer programs (cough cough USC) I know american football is the bread winner, but come on, how about limiting the team to only 50 scholarships, or cut girl's golf a sport in which colleges struggle to find athletes just so they don't violate title 9.
Cincinnati Bengal WR Chad Johnson is living proof that soccer in the United States will not compete with football until soccer starts looking like it offers close to the same amount of oppurtunity. It's logical for kids to choose other sports over soccer when soccer doesnt offer many college scholarships, it doesn't many fans except for overseas, and the pay is much worse. If soccer starts having at least half the appeal of football, american kids will flock to it and we will improve remarkably.

"Most of the world play soccer."

More people play soccer in the US than most countries in the world. The number is something like 18 million.

"At world class level"

We been to 5 straight world cups, including the quarterfinals in 2002. So we had a bad tournament last year. Argentina and France did too in 2002. Doesn't mean they they are not world class teams. We still managed to be the only team not to lose to the eventual world champions, Italy.

And, you better hope we don't take soccer as seriously as you do. Because if we do, the world cup will become a boring event for you as we will start dominating every team and win every cup.

Since you asked twice, I'll answer twice:

In case you haven't noticed, the USA has been to all of the last 5 world cup tournaments, and have already reached the quarterfinals. Wake up. McBride, Beasley, Keller, Freidal, Howard, Onyewu, Convey, Bocanegra, etc. etc. are just a few of the Americans now playing on some of the best teams in Europe.

Americans have to many other sports to catch their attention. Most kids growing up in the U.S. play soccer, they just become bored with it. As for calling baseball girlie, girls play softball, not baseball. Hey at least its not curling. By the way, F1 is the most watched sport in the world

I remember Us winning the American cup 4 years ago and don't remember when it was the last time England won the Europe one. And Us played the quarter final of Korea-Japan world cup as well as england played the last year world cup so I don't see any difference therefore I have to say they are absolutely the same.

Thanx!

the USA participates in the world cup....and thats the best tournament of the best sport in the world, isnt it? granted they dont get too far, but they make it to the group level, which alot of other countries dont. so as much as the USA sucks at soccer, they are a part of it.

in case you have not stated, the u . s . a . has been to each and each of the most suitable 5 international cup tournaments, and performance already reached the quarterfinals. awaken. McBride, Beasley, Keller, Freidal, Howard, Onyewu, placed across, Bocanegra, etc. etc. are in basic terms a number of the individuals now playing on lots of the most suitable communities in Europe. reaction to added comments: Everton, reading, Newcastle, Manchester city, Fulham, Blackburn, West Ham.....a lot of those EPL communities have individuals on the roster. those are not any more "third branch communities."
