Yes! From an article I read in Omni magazine in the early 1980's, it was reported that scientists using the BEVLAC (Billion Electro-Volt Linear Accellerator and snyChrotron) had, at great energy cost, bombarded an atom of Lead with the appropriate particles to transmute it into another element, and then another, and so on, until the -initially Lead- atom became an isotope of Gold - less than a billionth of a cent's worth!
The report concluded that this was not a cost-effective way to produce Gold. No Sh*t, Sherlock.
