when putting alloys on a car what does et mean?

wanna put alloys on my lupo and put some new springs on it. but don't want to have to avoid speed humps? how big alloy and tyre can i go and how much can i lower it without any kind of repacushions including nackering my suspension?

If you currently have 14-inch wheels, I would go no bigger than 15-inch wheels. If you go with 18-inch wheels, you'll have much too hard a ride and will run the risk of damaging your rims. Really, add no more than one inch (2.5 cm) and you'll be fine.
