If you have time, read "The Guns of August," 1964, by Barbara Tuchman. France and Germany were set to go at each other, since France lost to Prussia in 1870. The issue was mobilization: How fast after the declaration of war could each country roll? Germany's plan was to put all of its force on the "right wing," go through "neutral" Belgium, "Let the last man on the right brush the English Channel with his sleeve," and surround Paris. War over! A German Gen. von Kluck saw a chance to "turn left" and take Paris fast. A French Gen. Gallieni commandeered Paris taxis to take French soldiers to a new front in front of Paris and stop the Germans cold. After that, there was a long trench war of attrition. How did it end? France (and the allies) won by not losing. Germany (and Austria) lost by not winning.

Germany marched into neighbouring France to take over.

England was next on the German "visiting" agenda, so the British went to France for an early confrontation.

It resulted in the most terrible war; huge losses over months, in terrible conditions only for gains of a few hundred yards of land.
