My betta fish stays at the bottom and only swims to the top to get food. He is old (around two years.) I talked with a pet store worker and she said that he has a broken back. Is he in pain?

When he swims to the top, it looks like he is only using his back fin to push him to the top. When he is at the bottom, he only lies on his side. He eats normal. His color is the same as it always has been.

Odds are very slim he has a broken back. What else do you notice that seems odd about the fish?

EDIT: What you are describing sound a lot like just low temperature to me. Check his water temp to be sure it's in the mid 70's at least.

He sounds cold! Is he keeping his fins clamped to his body when he swims up? Sounds most likely to be the temperature - make sure it's 75/76degrees (though increase it slowly!)

He could also be constipated - my fish sit at the bottom sometimes before getting constipated - try feeding him the inside of a pea to see if it helps, it can't hurt.

Unless he has had an accident of some sort( like getting dropped) I doubt he has a broken back,it's probably something else wrong with him but without more information it's hard to say.

He could, but pet store workers don't know anything, don't trust him. Also don't kill the poor betta, he still has a chance, and it isn't our choice if an animal dies or not.
