the tornado itself is called a funnel cloud because it looks like a funnel. Smaller at the bottom and larger at the top. All tornados do not have this classical look and depending on the height above ground of the wall cloud where the tornado comes from the tornado may not be visible. Some have basically straight walls from the cloud to the ground. Some are tall and slender and some are short and very wide. They can range in width from several feet to over a mile. Some have refered to the classical tornado shape as an elephant's trunk.

Well, its usually referred to as a funnel, because usually when its coming out of the sky, thats what it looks like. But a tornado isnt a tornado until the cloud touches the ground, then it can take on a whole host of different shapes.So there really is no "typical" tornado, because there are all different shapes and sizes, some are short some are tall, some are skinny some are mile wide, some you cannot see at all for different reasons, like the cloud hangs very low, and it just looks like a bunch of dust with no actual visible shape.
