I would suggest a trip to a building supply store, like Lowe's, as a good place to start. Take along some photo's of your home, where you wish to attach the carport.

Some things to consider:
What style of carport do you want? You can actually build an addition to your home, or you can purchase stand alone units.
If you decide to build on, what style of roof, and which direction do you want it to run? The simplest would be a basic "lean-to", where the roof just slopes one direction, away from the home. Or you might prefer a peaked roof, similar to what your home has on it now.
How big does the carport need to be? One car? Two? Does it need to be a certain height?
What kind of floor do you want to park on? Dirt, gravel, concrete?

Once you have those basics decided, then you can go about planning your carport.

You might check out some of the books available in the building supply stores, or hardware stores, about building garages, carports, etc.

Have Fun!

Honestly, if you dont know where to start than I would reconsider building it yourself. You are building something that is structural, will have electric in it most likely and have a roof that will need to line up with the original roof line. You will also need to have a concrete floor poured with freeze wall and footing. They're not hard if you know what you are doing but strongly consider your level of experience before undertaking this project. Mybe you could find a general contractor in your area who would be wiling to work with you in the planning and construction processes. Better to be safe than what could turn out to be very sorry.

The FIRST thing to do is check with local town/city hall. They will have a list of regs and requirements. Then get some reading material for ideas and cost projections.
