Because drugs have side effects and sometimes they can be severe. They also have powerful lobbying groups and many times stay on the market long after there is considerable evidence that they are dangerous. Take the case of Proheart 6, the Heartworm prevention shot. The Drug Company who manufactured it tried their best to destroy the career of a veterinarian who tried to bring forth evidence of its danger. She's finally been vindicated with the recall of that product, but it took quite a battle.

Vets are not perfect. First, you have to remember that owners have spent every day for years with their pet, and a vet sees them for only 5 minutes. It is impossible for a vet to know everything about an animal, and there are often times that something is overlooked, and the prescribed meds could potentially be very dangerous to the animal.

Second, vets are a business. They work for money, not for fun. I have seen many cases of vets overprescribing medicine when it is not really needed. I once saw a vet tell someone that a scratch inside the dog's ear (caused by ear-plucking, which is both safe and necessary) was a cut and was infected and needed antibiotic treatment. The scratch did not even break skin and had actually occurred 20 minutes prior to the vet appointment, so there was no way it could have been infected. But it did not hurt the dog, and the vet made money, and sometimes that's how vets are. It's the same with vets who prescribe Hills Science Diet prescription foods. HSD is actually crappy food if you read the ingredients list. It's mostly fillers. But the vets get commission on every item of HSD food they sell, so they endorse it.

Sometimes owners just sense that something isn't right with what the vet did or gave them, and they want to see if anyone else has had a similar experience. I have thrown away meds given to me by a vet because I know my animals and I know whether or not they needs medication. I have never lost a pet yet, so I'm going to keep doing things my way.

metronidazole is a dewormer as well as a good medication for diarrhea/stomach issues. Panacur is a few day long deworming product (typically done for 3-6 days only) Metacam is a pain medication cosequin is pretty much just a joint supplement all of these are fine to take together. the panacur you will only be dosing for a few days and the cosequin is simply a supplement. i'm not sure why you are on the metacam though, was the dog just castrated? either way these are all perfectly fine to take together. if you worry about overdosing, or upsetting his stomach spread out the meds throughout the day

You want to know why?? Cause the vet sometimes doesn't know that certain breeds shouldn't take certain medications.. Here someone might have come across something someone else found out the hard way..

Dobermans for example can't tolerate Sulpha based drugs and should never be given NSAIDS...
My vet didn't know that... Lots of them don't!

People just want other people's opinions and experiences. I think everyone on here should realize that you can't trust everything that is posted. Chill out.
