The English language uses the word 'square' to mean 'rectangle with two adjacent sides equal'.
It saves writing such a long expression.

to find the area, you multiply the b*h, but really b*b which is the base squared so any square number can be the area of a square. (guess)

because if you find the area of a square it is only 1 side times iteself which means that it is one side squared
