The United States of America is a federal republic and a representative democracy.
1. The term republic can simply mean any form of government not headed by a monarch. A republic's sovereignty is based on popular consent and its governance is based on popular representation. Many diverse nations are described as republics some of them have some form of democracy some don't.
1a.The US is described as a federal republic because it doesn't have a monarch, the nation is divided into states, and power is shared by the state and central government.
2. The United States Federal Government is designed as a liberal (in the sense that liberties are protected by law, there are supposed free and open elections) representative democracy where the people elect others to make decisions on issues that affect the community as a whole. This is opposed to direct democracy where the people make decisions on issues themselves.

The United States is currently a United Republic.
However, the way that some polls are turning out, it wouldn't shock me if we turn Socialist pretty soon.
And to tell you the truth, Socialism wouldn't be much different than the way things are now. Even Fascism would work here. Everyone would still be able to keep their civil liberties and freedoms. Things would just be ran more by the government.
But as far as Communism goes; we'll never be Communist. That's when our freedoms will go away.

Sheesh! "Turn us into a socalist/communist nation?" What have you been smoking? It must be good stuff. The US is so far from socialism your rant is completely absurd. The most radical Democrats are very much centrists on the world scale of things. The US doesn't really even have a "Left" party, given there are only really two parties. It's why you people mostly think Left/Right, Red/Blue, Us/Them, etc. It's a false image of the way things work, but it's what your media and pundits have constructed for you. There's a much wider political spectrum in the world than most Americans seem to be aware of; your Republicans and Democrats run the entire gamut from Far Right to (maybe slightly) Left of Center. Learn a little about the world before you make an *** of yourself again.

you thought right! the united states of america is a representative republic...a government of the people yes, but not a 'democracy' where majority rules. the thing that sets our constitution apart from other forms of governance is that it gives the minority view a great deal of power and influence. stop looking for where it says that this country is a democracy, it isn't in there...democracy is the 'process' by which we elect our president and our representatives to congress and nothing more...

We are a republic. But with the lack of education in our nation today, along with our "sound bite" media, the words democracy and republic have become virtually interchangeable. This has also become true of the words liberal and democrat, republican and conservative and communist and socialist.

It is not, has not been a democracy in almost 100 years.
presently it is a facist country run by various rich and power families and corporate groups.
and no I am not nuts or an anarchist or anything like that.
want proof? look up facist in the dictionary. also check out the symbols on the wall in the senete floor. they are symbols of facism. The ones that are a bundle of sticks wrapped around an axe.
Used to be on the dime too.
scary huh.

You are correct.
We are a Republic, for now.
We may lose much of our freedom after 2008, with a Democrat President & a Democrat Congress.
They want to turn us into a Socialist/Communist Nation.

Democracy is a descriptive word, not a form of government. We have a democratic forum within a republican form of government.

We are a democratic republic, but it doesn't matter... look at all the people who have no idea what socialist or communist means! Just dangle the carrot, and they will come running...
