Early 1970's...

Late sixties. Pig Pen was the king and taught those young men how to perform. What is so cool is that you can tell that they dropped acid then got on stage. The music was straight forward for the first set then the drugs kicked in and in the second set they would get so tripped out.

There is nothing better than a 69 "The Other One" and listening to Bobby freaking out on stage. Or a Pig Pen "Lovelight" or even a freaky "Morning Dew"

i like the late 70's the most. when mickey was back in the band and donna jean was on vocals. keith's piano was wonderful and jerry was at his peak on guitar. it was before the mid 80's when he got too crazy with the guitar effects. the jams at this time were great. they didn't get over the top and space hadn't been introduced yet. space, for me, is a good time to use the bathroom during the show. it bores me. the closing of winterland dvd is the best dvd the band has released, just because it came during this era.
a second favorite era is the early brent years. i love his hammond organ. his electric piano didn't sound as nice as keith's though. brent's voice gave the band a different character for backup vocals. a far far contrast to how donna sang.

I honestly have to say that I don't like not one song from The Grateful Dead. Never been a fan!

I like the...
winter of 73'
AND
fall of 74'.
AND
Fall of 89'
AND
Spring of 90'.
the most (right now).

I enjoy the 2nd sets mostly, especially in the 89-92 period.

Oh yeah..May of 77 is amazing too.

Boy, that's a hard question. I'm a big fan of 1972 to 1974. However, even in the band's weakest period, there's no shortage of good shows.
