He drew a circle that shut me out-
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout
But love and I had wit to win
We drew a circle that took him in.

I don't really understand what that poem is talking about. Especially the line that says "Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout". Please help me!

I think it means that the man did not want her at first "he drew a circle that cut me out" ...but then she made him fall in love "We drew a circle that took him in". The we is the woman and love.

I think what I can interpret it as saying is that this guy didn't want anyone around him and wanted to be left alone. He wanted solitude so he went against the norm and rebelled. Doesn't like being around people. So he drew the circle for himself and nobody else. Until someone came along that was funny and had laugher (wit) and showed that they had concern for him (love) so they drew a circle and the lonely guy joined them and he changed. He dumped his solitude or lonely ways when he joined the group.

Yikes...um, I think that it means that "he" tried to block somebody out of his life while someone else had the ability to get in.
