The newer movies seem to lose any sense of thought. It's almost like the film industry only makes them to get paid. Especially with comedies, the writing has gone down hill! I realize movies are for entertainment, but it seems like every and any screenplay gets bought nowadays. Is it just me or will America watch just about anything?

I know, I fully agree with you especially the horror films made today. It seems like all the horror movies have the same plot, the same theme, and the same ending. The horror movies aren't like they were in the 80's or before that. Comedies aren't even funny and you can't really relate to the material because it's so immature. I know that lately I've stopped watching movies unless I need to know more about it for informational tools but I totally agree with everything you just said - movies have lost all artistic quality.

No, it's not only you. There are a lot of bad movies being made... a lot more then good ones. People these days find stupidity funny (usually because they can relate to it :) so movie writers and playwrights are making stupid movies and stupid plays. No one wants art anymore, well almost no one anyway, they all want FUNNY. This is all related to the supply and demand phenomenon, people demand crappy movies , so the big movie industry is only giving them what they want.

But every once in a while, there is a good movie which actually has a meaning. They are more and more rare though.

A few good movies: Apocalypse Now, The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, American Beauty, Idiocracy.

There are a lot more of bad movies though: Are we there yet?, 2Fast 2 Furious, 50 First dates, Snakes on a Plane, Wedding Crashers, and so many others!

Most movies which have a meaning aren't understood by most people, and are therefore unpopular. Lets take The Chronicles of Narnia for example. The reason it was popular was because it apealed to everyone, unlike most movies of quality. Most people see it as a kids movie, made to entertain simple minds, but in fact it is much more then that.
The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) is a movie about WW2. It takes factual events and shows them in a way which is entertaining for simple minded people and also for those with more complex minds. This movie is full of metaphors and paradigms (religious and moral paradigms).
Here is a list of what things represent in the world of Narnia:
The wolves (secret police) = Gestapo
The witch = Hitler, Satan, Evil
Hot chocolate & Turkish delight = bribe, power, temptation (like the snake in Adam & Eve)

Even if there are some things related to religion in this movie, it is in no way a religious movie.

So basically, yeah, there are really bad movies, but you just have to look harder to find the needle in the hay stack.

NOT ONLY are the movies losing artistic quality, they're losing the whole reason they are making movies in the first place. With the downslide of education in our country these days, the film makers are simply going to make movies that impress the idiots, since they seem to yell the loudest.

Look at films that are made from books - the books are where the characters get their depth, their emotions, their insecurities, and everything that makes a book worth reading.

PICK UP A BOOK AND READ - USE YOUR MIND, IT'S YOUR BIGGEST MUSCLE.....

I think so yes. Hollywood movies have gone downhill because they: 1) Underestimate the intelligence of the observer, and 2) Have been underminding the female role lately. I haven't seen a smart female lead in a while.

Foreign films are different though. They're often smart and thought inspiring. Check out "City of God".

It's unfortunate, but at the same time, we can all chose to find our entertainment elsewhere. Like books.

Begining? It's been that way. But we have to seek out the harder to find indies if we want more artistic films... they're around, but we have to find them. As for comedies, good luck there. As for your question about what America will watch... Does Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor answer you question?

Indeed...the art is at low key these days...it is special effect and slam/bam/crash action but not the quality of the script or the acting. However, it does appeal to the audience or they would not be making fortunes with those movies, a sad reflection of our society and its taste.

Totally agree with you. Its like they have run out of ideas to make movies into. There are so many stupid stupid movies that you know wont turn into classics, like they have in the past. I mean.... example: Napolean Dynomite. Not a good movie (in my opinion) and they're thousands of people that just love that movie! I dont get it.
