Becauses if it didn't, then there wouldn't be two identical copies to give to each of the two daughter cells.

The cell will soon divide into 4 parts. If it didn't copy itself there would be no viable cell division .

When it divides it always keeps one original and one copy. This allows for it to always be the same and there is a smaller chance for error.
