I tend bar at the same club I DJ in and I live in Massachusetts. Here, a dollar per drink is the normal tip. If you run a tab, then you should leave at least a dollar/drink plus a few extra. Tabs are more work than paying by the round. You have to keep all the tabs straight, be responsible for credit cards...you also tend to get your drinks faster if you run a tab because the bartender has to mark each drink each time we make it so you tend to remember the orders and just automatically make the round as soon as you say yes. You don't usually have to go thru the whole list. It's just nice when someone acknowledges it.

Depends on the location. If the service was nothing special, I usually throw down a couple of bucks. In major city areas, some bartenders are mortified if they do not get 20 percent, so $3 would fit the bill.

That said, I don't see where a bartender could be too offended by a buck a drink. People are usually tipping on the fly, and $16 is quite a bit for two drinks.

I was a bartender for 6 years and I will tell you that if a customer came up and just ordered two drinks like that and didn't start a tab to order more, then I was happy for $1. Because I could move on to the next customer and make another $1 quickly. Now if you start a tab and drink more than one at a time, then you should tip 20%. We are different that waitresses in that we take your order and make it and serve every need, as opposed to taking your order and giving it to someone else to make it for you.

Bars are a bit different than other food establishments. If it's a run of the mill bar, tip one dollar per drink. If it's a "high class" cocktail lounge, adjust your tip upward as appropriate.
