They had free elections, the problem was the people didn't elect the candidates the Americans wanted, they elected the candidates they wanted. Yes that is a democracy.

yes, but the occupation is trying to break down the Democracy. The occupation and oppression is quite enough proof that Israel doesn't want democracy in Palestine. People say Pali's are terrorist, think about what you would do if you were in a country occupied by another that keeps killing and stealing stand, bulldozing your home and the only weapon you really have in yourself along with stones, and home made bombs when your occupier has all of the lastest technology..... think about it
America won't accept the leaders voted by the people because it doesn't fit their agenda..... America must realize she is not the leader of the world..... look what we have for a president
The Palestinian struggle has become the number one national liberation struggle in the world today. It is similar to the historic struggles for independence of India and South Africa. The majority of Palestinians are proving that they too want and can bring change through peaceful, non-violent resistance.

Democracy means "rule by the people"
In Palestine, the people don't rule. They live under foreign occupation by Israel. In practice that means that:
a) Israel can decide who to kill, and Israelis can kill Palestinians without prosecution or punishment, unless Israel decides one is warranted which happens in maybe half the cases,
b) Israel can take privately owned land away from Palestinians and give it to Israeli settlers,
c) Israel can throw Palestinians into jail for any reason, for any length of time, under military orders. This is often applied to peaceful protesters
d) Israel can decide who can enter, and within the occupied territories, who can travel between one part of the of occupied territories and another (or more often, who can't)
e) Israel can decide who can build a home for their family on their own land
f) Israel decides who can live in whatever areas of the occupied territories
g) Israel can decide what goods can be imported or exported
h) Israel can take whatever water resources are under the occupied territories and use them for its own people
i) Israelis can vandalize and destroy Palestinian farms, homes and property without interference from the Israeli authorities
The Palestinians can vote, but they don't have a democracy.

It's a democracy. America however would not accept this because George Bush has his own definition of democracy which he insists we must all accept or else...
