the solid mercedes were 107, 123, 126, 124, 129 bodies everything since has been a tinkertoy [neat but no substance] remember people a true luxury anything has to last. i have personally seen the aforementioned cars [with proper care, service and driving habits] go 300 k + miles and still be rock solid cars [except for driver seat bottom cushions] the current Lexus models have it all over the current crop of mercedes products they don't puke oil, the electronics actually work and powertrain management systems are refined and reliable, they also have have better fit and finish and still cost less. so come on "hans" get with the program or get out of the business your has been trash is blocking my service bay. one last note the above mentioned cars were intelligent joy's to work on as well as solid values the new cars are the quality equivalent of a renault encore

Ah - but this is a brand which has seen a massive paradigm over the past twenty odd years.
In the early 80's - 83 as I recall, the 190 was born. This was a response to the BMW E30 (their decision to leave the "exclusive" market and enter mass production.
Therefore these luxury brands took a nice chunk of the market - an entry level Mercedes or BMW was competitive with a well spec'd Ford or GM.
But the new kids on the block - examples are Audi, Lexus and SAAB, entered the ring.
Therefore as of late, cost cutting on outsourced components has become very real; thus Mercedes did go through a period of suspect quality.
I understand this has been resolved.

I have to say the 2 MB I have had were the finest autos I have ever owned. The 89 300e was like a little sports car handled great, solid as a rock, till my 18 year old daughter totaled it (so sad). The 300SE my god was like riding a big leather sofa, whats a bump. I took it from NH to FL x2 and from NH to PA x3 and wasn't fatigued at all. Fantastic fuel economy on the highway 28mpg at 85 mph (sorry any LE that is reading this). As soon as my last 2 daughters get out of collage it will be time to get another MB. But not a new one they seem to have a lot of problems.

I have a 1983 S-class coupe and it is the best car I have ever owned or driven. It has had it's problems but has never failed to proceed and at rate of knots if required to do so. Apart from an intermittent rattle under the rear right window (my fault) it is still rattle free. It's a bit thirsty but since I don't drive it every day, who cares? I'd take it out and drive 1600km tomorrow.
Later models? M-B lost the plot in the late 1990s and have not got themselves sorted out. They made their name with a limited number of models with a limited number of versions, all carefully designed and engineered. That was between 1955 and 1995 or so. Now they have far too many models and far too many versions with far too many silly doodads that break down. Forty-foot poles come to mind. No thank you, and still less a BMW.

luxury is okay, but trustworthiness...buzzer sound! When I am sitting in the Mercedes I feel like I am in heaven, I'm so relaxed. A Mercedes means you have hit the big times. You just have the satisfaction of driving it. it's really a beautiful and luxurious car, but if I ever got one, I would put a Chevy engine in it, just to help me save my money on engine repairs. I would not feel pleased until I got one.

The only word I thing about is "great". I have a 67 MB250S (a 4-dr sedan) and a 84 500SL (sports convertible) and they are both great driving cars. I get 'thumbs up' when i'm in either one.

to fourcheeks4:
You are right, except "Chevy engine idea." Mercedes engine is more reliable than Chevy, so it will not need that many repairs. And to change the engine is not easy, even for your auto mechanic husband.
Don't do it. If you do, we, Mercedes purists, will be upset with you.
