I LOVED these books when I read them in high school. I loved the philosophical element to them. I would like to find something else in that genre, or at least similar. Any recommendations? I would also be interested in any general recommendations anyone has for someone who loved those two books. I love to read, and I enjoy a wide variety of books, not just books of a specific type. Thanks!!!

Huxley's last novel, Island, published in 1962.

Brave New World Revisited (Harper & Row, 1958, 1965), written by Huxley almost thirty years after Brave New World, was a non-fiction work in which Huxley considered whether the world had moved towards or away from his vision of the future from the 1930s. He believed when he wrote the original novel that it was a reasonable guess as to where the world might go in the future but in Brave New World Revisited he concluded that the world was becoming much more like Brave New World much faster than he thought.

The Scientific Outlook by philosopher Bertrand Russell. When Brave New World was released, Russell thought that Huxley's book was based on his book The Scientific Outlook that had been released in previous year.

The 1921 novel Men Like Gods by H.G. Wells. A utopian novel that was a source of inspiration for Brave New World.

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
Time Enough for Love by Robert A. Heinlein
both are futuristic but a happier type of novel.
Kurt Vonnugut books are very similar in genre to the books you mention and really great reads.

There is the feminist version of Orwell's 1984, called a "handmaiden's tale" by Margaret ATwood, which is about a future society where women are reduced to service and reproductive roles...

There is also Fahrenheit 450, Bradbury's futuristic book about a society were book burning is accepted for the greater good...

There is also a science fiction book called a childhood's end by arthur C clarke, which, although its scienefiction and it talks about humans fictionally encountering alien life in the future, it sorta touches on the same themes.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The Futurological Congress by Stanisław Lem
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
Journals of the Plague Years by Norman Spinrad
Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany (more or less)
You may also find the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov interesting.
Also George Lucas' first film THX 1138 (nothing to do with star wars)

I'm 14 and I loved 1984. I have not yet read Brave New World, though.

I would certainly recommend Animal Farm by George Orwell. It spoofs the soviet political issues of the 1930-1940 era.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel is great!! It is extremely deep and profound, and left me brethless at the end.

Hope I helped!

I suggest Lois Lowry's "The Giver"

It's a little simpler than the Brave New World or 1984, but the message in it is very clear and it still a very profound book.

I suggest Franz Kafka's "The Trial". It is not quite straight forward and deals more with the affects that unwarranted persecution by groups has upon the psyche of the individual.

It is not science fiction as the aforementioned books, but it deals with similar themes.
