If we cut and run Iraq will collapse into a terrorist breeding failed state (plus the world will know we've failed).

It should also be obvious to anyone with half a brain that we are not winning now, and can't ever win with the current level of troops.

Why can't everyone (including the generals) just admit the obvious - only the draft and at least 500,000 troops on the ground can win this war.

The draft would completely stop the non-sense propaganda coming from the right wingers. This why FDR/Harry Truman won WWII.

Actually having been in the military during the draft and after the draft, I can honestly say that we don't need the draft.

The quality of personnel in the volunteer army is better than when we had the draft.

Given the type of equipment being used today, it takes some pretty intelligent people to make the equipment work. I am by no means saying that draftees were not smart. A big percentage of draftees were there because they were forced to be in the military and many just didn't want to participate and could care less what happened.

On the comment that more troops are needed in Iraq, well since the middle east has been killing each other for 100's of years, it doesn't matter if we have 1 million troops, they will continue to kill each other. Someone who indoctrinates young kids to strap bombs to their bodies and kill themselves and a bunch of innocent people is not my idea of rational people.

But hey, that is just my take on it.

People keep saying that it's unfair that some people due to economic problems are forced to join the military to get money for college So why don't we have the Federal Government give poor and working class people free college tuition. Then people wouldn't have to join the military to get college money.

Charles Rangel seems to think that instead of giving the poor and working class Government money and free education so they don't have to be poor that the solution is to continue sending the poor off to die but just make sure some rich people are also killed as well to achieve social class equality.

Why today are we trying to fix the problem of social class inequality by putting rich people in fox holes with poor people when we could instead put poor people in college classrooms with rich people?I disagree with Rangel and am annoyed at the way the debate is framed where there are Conservatives for a volunteer Army and Liberals for a draft to supposedly make things fair.

People like me who are against the draft but want to raise taxes on the corporations and give everyone free college money are not represented my side of liberalisim isn't represented in this debate I'm against Rangel and I'm against having student loans instead of free tutition which is why some people have to join the Army.

I also believe that a draft while I don't like it is constiutional since it's been done in the past.So a drafy can be.However mandatory national service where people who aren't in the military are forced against their will to perform nonmilitary labor is clearly a violation of the 13th amendment and Rangel should be ashamed of himself saying in an interview with Vibe magazine that because of Hurricane Katrina we need mandatory service along with a draft.

We could easily have the Federal Government build section 8 housing so every person who lost a home in NewOrleans can return I would raise taxes to pay for it.And Hillary Clinton herself through surrogates like Charles Rangel, Bruce Reed and Rahm Emmanuel has signaled that she might even support the unconstitutional mandatory state service plan.So don't be fooled by those people who tell you you're only options are to have NewOrleans in ruins and poor and working class people coming home in body bags.Or a draft or state service plan.

The Third option is simply taking the Federal Government poverty programs from the 1960's and 30's and doing them again.DON'T SUPPORT ANY CANDIDATE WHO CALLS FOR MANDATORY STATE SERVICE A DRAFT IS AT LEAST CONSTITUTIONAL EVENTHOUGH I DON'T LIKE THAT BUT MANDATORY STATE SERVICE AND NATIONAL ID CARDS ARE UNAMERICAN

anyone with half a brain as you said, would realize that Iraq IS NOT THE ONLY PLACE TERRORISTS TRAIN! what about the entire African continent? or the rest of the countries in the Middle east? how about Russia?

the world already knows we've failed, some Americans just haven't caught on to the FACT.....military force cannot defeat an idea, we'd have to kill every man in the entire region to "win" this pointless war.

A draft would be the perfect cure. What we need is to flood Iraq with troops. Those damn terrorist types would cut and run like the cowards that they really are. PUSSYS wrapped in cotton cloths!!!!! Kill em all!!!!!!

I don't understand why we "need" the draft, although I think we should have it anyway.

There are at least 3 million Bush-supporters of fighting age in this country who have not enlisted in our military to go over and fight for the President and the rhetoric they support.

Why isn't our military over-flowing with brand new Bush-supporting recruits? They all TALK a good deal about how great Bush is and how justified this war is, yet our army is stretched thin and stressed out from overwork and all these Bush-supporters are still here in America TALKING. It seems to me that the best way to support our troops is by joining them on the ground in Iraq.

Are they hypocrites or just plain chicken?

ok, I can see who has been getting all their info from the Bush news agency ..I mean FOX.

Before you tune me out, I FOUGHT the 1st gulf war.

Let me tell ya a secret, Arabs want us out of their countries. They think the US presence is polluting their culture and their faith. Here is the kicker, it is.

How would you like it if the Arab nations, moved in and took over America? Put veils on all our women and forced all men to grow beards? Whould that kinda piss you off?

The Arab states would not give a hoot what we did in our country if we would just stay out of their countries. It is that simple.

This is not about some nazi empire trying to take over the world. It is some small countries trying to be left alone and to solve their own problem without interference.

You might say "OOOOOO but they war with each other and don't have the same beliefs as us...we have to save them by making them like us !"

If you can take a look around, WE use military force all the time...we are no better.
Also, our culture and cultural values are no better than any other counties, your just taught to think so.

We don't need a draft, we need to get out of their counties and let them settle their own problems.

I am glad we have Paul (above) to tell us what the Arab people want.

I wish we could have a draft but it would be very scary. Have you seen the kids of today? I think voluntary enlisting is best until all of this liberal crap goes over the deep end and people start raising good kids again. We are getting the best of them.

And for the reamrk about millions of Bush supporters not signing up; if his approval rating is so low, how many more liberals of age does that leave who are not signing up? Again, I really don't think we want most of them defending us.

You may have a point. I think the selective service has something to do with it. Backdoor draft, recycling our tired and wounded brave soldiers is not working. A real draft? Iran gets more volatile it may happen.
In my opinion, and bias from research, elect Hillary Clinton and we will be there.

Iraq is a money pit and I don't know if more troops can possible help.

HOWEVER, we need a regular standing military (not the Nationa Guard/militia - a stupid idea that doesn't work) more than we ever did, and we are putting ourselves in exceptional danger by overtaxing our existing troops. I very much hate the fact, but it is time to expand the military as soon as possible. If they can't do it with incentives (and it appears they can't), I sadly agree that we need conscription.
